Maintenance or How to clean your Nags Head Hammocks products!

White Polyester Rope and DuraCord Rope

Use OxiClean, water and a soft-bristled scrub brush. A liquid detergent such as Wisk also works well. Put the hammock in a children's pool or in the bath tub and wet it down thoroughly. Let soak for as long as you need and scrub the dirt by either rubbing the ropes together or using a soft brush. Try to leave the wooden spreader bars and the galvanized o-ring out of the water as much as possible. You may want to use 2 plastic containers to serve as a stand for the wooden parts while you let the rope soak. Let air dry on a flat surface so that the rope does not stretch while drying.

Wood and Wooden Furniture

The finish will wear off in time from weathering. Maintaining the finish will lengthen the life of your hammock, chair or swing. On most items, you can take the product apart and slide the rope out of the wooden sticks. Use the technique shown below so that the ropes do not unloop themselves. Remove all the nuts and bolts you can so that it is easier to clean the wooden pieces. On some items, screws are covered by wooden caps that are glued in place. You will need to do your best to remove the wooden plugs and order new ones from us.

Once all the wood pieces are ready, sand the wood using a 120 sand paper. Some of the grey coloration close to the bolts will not come off so do not over sand these areas. To refinish the wood, you can use any shade of polyurethane marine grade varnish. The original type used is high gloss and you can find it at any hardware store. We apply 3 coats of varnish but you can use less if not needed. In between coats, you can re-sand the pieces with a 220 sand paper and remove the drip bubbles at the extremities of the wooden sticks. Let air dry completely between coats. You can take this opportunity to use new nuts, bolts, washers, and screws which can be found at your local hardware store as well.

Cypress Wood Stands
Follow the same instruction as the wood furniture above, except use boiled linseed oil to finish the freshly sanded wood. This will nourish the wood and protect it for years to come. You can also varnish it using the same method described for our wooden furniture.

Metal Stands
Metal stand can rust after years of use. Small scratches and foreign particles sticking to the stand can create rust. Since the swing and hammock metal stands are powder coated, there is no touch up paint available. You can always purchase some rust resistant metallic paint to touch them up and match the color as best as you can. To refinish the stand completely, lightly sand the metal poles and repaint with rust resistant outdoor spray paint.

Sunbrella and DuraCord Fabric (Pillows, Swings, Hammock Pads)
Our pillows are made with Sunbrella fabric and can be washed using warm water, a mild soap and a soft brush. You can take the padding out of the furniture pillow for an easier wash. The hammock pillow has to be cleaned with the pad inside. Some of our swings are made with cushioned fabric and can be cleaned with a garden hose and some mild soap. The same goes for the hammock pads. Do not put in the washer and dryer. Hand wash and let air dry on a flat surface.

General Care
Choose a shady area as much as possible to hang your hammock, chair or swing. The more shade, the longer the life of the rope and the varnish will be. Store your Nags Head products in a dry area during the winter seasons. Do not store where mice or bugs can get to your hammock. Always check the metal chains and bolts for wear, especially if they rust from weathering. Replace if necessary.
