Assembly Instructions for Nags Head Hammock's
Bent Oak & Rope Single Swing
Bent Oak & Rope Single Swing

Parts List:
  1. "Roll Up" Unit: This consists of the rope seat on two 27" oak bars. The rope is held in place with a retaining strip and brass tacks on one bar (top bar) and a 3/8" thick strip with screws on the other bar (bottom bar). Also inside the roll up unit is a loose 27" Oak Bar and a 29" Branded Spreader Bar.
  2. Chain Set: This consists of your pre-cut assembled chains for hanging your swing, and a welded ring; eyebolts, nuts and washers are attached for ease of assembly.
  3. Laminated Curved Arm Units (2).
  4. Instruction Sheet and Hardware Packet: This includes instructions, (2) 2 1/2" Carriage Bolts, (2) Hex Nuts, (2) Washers, and (1) Hooks.

Assembly:
  1. Set arm units on the floor approximately two feet apart. Arm units should be "standing" up (see diagram). If facing the swing, the branded arm unit is on the left hand side.
  2. Take loose 27" bar from the roll up unit and attach to the inside holes in back/bottom of the arm unit (see diagram) using a 2 1/2" carriage bolt, line up the holes on each piece, knock carriage bolt through both pieces then follow with a washer and a nut. Tighten. Repeat with other side.
  3. Unroll the roll up unit. Unbag your chain set. Put hook aside for hanging. Lay the chain sets out with the long piece to the front/bottom and the short piece to the back/top of swing (see diagram). Unscrew nuts and remove washers from the eyebolts. Set aside. Carefully untangle and untwist chains before attaching.
  4. Attach "top" bar of the roll up unit to the back/top of the arm unit at the single hole. Line up the holes, knock eyebolt through with a washer in place between the eye and the wood, follow with another washer and nut. Tighten. Repeat with other side.
  5. Attach "bottom" bar of the roll up unit to the front/bottom of the arm unit at the remaining holes. Line up the holes, knock the eyebolt through with a washer in place between the eye and the wood, follow with another washer and a nut. Tighten. Repeat with other side.
  6. Take the 29" branded spreader bar, if facing the swing the brand will be visible, put the unattached end of one of the chain sets up through one of the holes in the spreader bar, then attach the chain to the quick link on the welded ring. Repeat with the other side.

*Note: Be sure to tighten quick link completely with pliers. *
*** Please check and tighten all hardware prior to first use and periodically thereafter to ensure your safety. When hanging swing make sure chains are not twisted or kinked in any way, as this will adversely affect the safety of the swing. ***

Installation:

Install the ceiling hooks in overhead support. The supports can be ceiling joists, a sturdy limb or a beam installed for the swing. Ready made stands or instructions to build one are available. Please inquire. If the ceiling joists are not exposed, locate one by tapping on the ceiling. They are usually 16 to 24 inches apart. Once you find a suitable support, drill a 3/16" starter hole to screw the ceiling hooks into and tighten so that the shank is no longer visible. The chain set is "hot-dip" galvanized which results in thick areas on the chain, making it a snug fit over the hook. Do not adjust chains as they are properly connected and able to withstand approximately 250 lbs. of weight. Altering them may result in injury or damage for which we cannot be held responsible. We offer replacement chain sets when the set is no longer safe due to rust or corrosion. Please inquire.

Height:

Use chains to adjust the swing to a level and comfortable height, about 15" from the floor to the edge of the swing. We generally find the swing easier to use if it hangs low enough to keep your feet on the floor.

Maintenance:

The rope body of the Bent Oak and Rope Single Swing is woven in one piece. If the weave of the rope body is pulled out of shape, you can brush or adjust it into shape with your hands. Water will not hurt the rope in any way. However, we highly recommend placing the swing in shaded areas when using the natural cotton or colored ropes. For sun exposure, use only white polyester rope. Excessive sunlight will fade the finish on the oak frame and that should be periodically replaced using a high quality polyurethane varnish. To replace the finish on the frame (rather than taking the swing apart) simply remove the strips on the front and back of the swing and slide the rope body to one side. After the finish has dried, slide the rope to the other side of the swing and repeat. When finished and dry, rearrange the ropes evenly across the frame and replace the wood strips. We do not recommend removing the rope from the oak frame. The rope is washable using a mild detergent, soft brush and a garden hose... always leave the item fully assembled. Wash the rope while it is still on the oak frame. The pillows are washable also. Remove the foam from the opening in the back of the pillow and wash using a mild detergent, air dry. Taking your swing down in the winter will prolong the life of the finish, hardware and overall appearance of your swing. Store your swing in a protected area away from mice and moisture.
